In the news...
Everything we're expecting Apple to launch on September 12 — ow.ly
It's safe to say this is one of Apple's most important launches in years. It'll be held in the new Steve Jobs theater at the new Apple headquarters in Cupertino (the "spaceship").
We're betting on an updated iPhone 7, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and the one everyone is waiting for - the 10th anniversary iPhone. It's still up for debate what it'll be called, but it looks to be a significant upgrade.
If you have an Apple TV, you can tune in live under the "Apple Events" channel. You can also stream or follow it online.
Security Researchers Discover Spammer List of Over 711 Million Email Accounts
An unknown hacker has gathered up to 711 million email accounts stored on an “open and accessible” server in the Netherlands, ZDNet reported. Read this article to find out more, and what you can do if your email was included.
We always recommend that your e-mail password is UNIQUE and that you CHANGE IT if your address comes up on a list like this.
What's new on Amazon Prime Video in September 2017 — ow.ly Amazon Prime Video has quickly become one of the go-to destinations for on-demand content. Here's what's new in September 2017.
In the voice department...
Alexa's new music feature will make you want more Alexas — ow.ly
I've always wondered when this was coming. I recently set this up in the Alexa app, and it's quite easy to do. Once configured, you can tell Alexa to play something in the other room. This article gives a good overview.
Google Home now makes voice calls, and they’re free in Canada and the U.S. — ow.ly
If you have a Google Home smart speaker, now you can make voice calls for FREE via the speaker. (United States calls only) I set this up and verified that it is indeed slick to use, especially if your contacts are stored in Google. It's configured in the Google Home app. Then, to call someone simply say "OK Google, call <name>". To hang up, tap the top of the device.
A DEFINITE advantage over the rollout on Echo/Alexa, where you can only call other Alexa users. Plus, with the Echo you have to configure the privacy and "drop in" settings correct, otherwise long lost strangers may end up listening in to the room.
In tech history...Voyager rocks on!
If you are under 40, you've never known the world without a Voyager spacecraft beaming pictures home to Earth. Voyager 1 launched on September 5, 1977, with its twin Voyager 2 launching two weeks later.
As of August 2017, Voyager 1 was at a distance of 20.8 billion kilometers (139.3 AU) from the Sun.
Voyager 2 was at a distance of 17.2 billion kilometers (115 AU).
Voyager 1 is escaping the solar system at a speed of about 3.6 AU per year.
Voyager 2 is escaping the solar system at a speed of about 3.3 AU per year.
