It's June - It's summer - It's Lökwest tech news!
Welcome to summer! In this issue's feature, we've got tips to avoid Cyberscams from last month's presentation. It seems like the issue of security and privacy keeps coming up over and over again. When does convenience outweigh security? We've included a great little essay on that too.
As always, we've also got tech news, amazing technology news and a little bit of tech history to start your June right.
Thanks for tuning in! We'll see you at the beach :)

The latest from Apple
Apple WWDC 2018: what's new? All the announcements from the keynote — ow.ly
WWDC 2018 brings iOS 12, macOS 10.14, watchOS 5 and more. While they didn't announce any new devices, there are some particularly good features coming to the new iOS. Apps will launch much quicker, and you'll be able to track time spent on apps.
Tech continues to amaze
Google just gave a stunning demo of Assistant making an actual phone call — ow.ly
A great way to get things done or Pandora's box of robocalls? Google just showed off a stunning, in-the-works capability of Google Assistant; it might someday make actual phone calls on your behalf. It's called Duplex, and though there has been a debate on trickery or not involved in the demo, it has some interesting implications.
Artificial Intelligence Is Cracking Open the Vatican's Secret Archives — ow.ly
Straight out of The DaVinci Code! Actually, the Vatican is tackling a very interesting problem that even humans have a hard time with - reading old handwriting. Read how this project untangles the handwritten texts in one of the world’s largest historical collections.
You're never too old for tech
Sprint is the next carrier to announce an awesome plan for over 55's — ow.ly
Sprint's Unlimited 55+ launches May 18 and is eerily similar to T-Mobile's offering, which has the same name and features. If you're over 55 you shouldn't be paying more than $50 for one line or $70 for two for unlimited!
82-Year-Old Japanese Woman Finds Success in Coding — ow.ly
You think you're too old to code? Check out Masako Wakamiya. She learned to code only last year, but has already created the popular iOS mobile game Hinadan and spoke to the UN about her experience. That definitely one-ups the crossword puzzle!
Alexa? How Voice-First Technology Helps Older Adults — ow.ly
All the things you didn't know voice assistants could help with when it comes to getting older. You'll be inspired by the study taking place right in our backyard near San Diego.
In privacy news
I'm Not (Overly) Concerned About Smart Speaker Security, And You Shouldn't Be Either — ow.ly
This is a great essay on the tradeoffs between security and convenience when it comes to speakers. It goes over several hacking scenarios - NONE of which will probably affect you. So go ahead and use your speakers in my humble opinion.
13 things to know about the GDPR — ow.ly
A new law is taking effect in Europe — the General Data Protection Regulation aka “the GDPR.” This read from Mozilla explains what the law is and how it may affect you, even if you live outside of Europe. (And it's a great plug on why Firefox is a great alternative to Chrome if you value privacy!)
In tech history...how much for that pizza?
Bitcoin Pizza Day: Celebrating the Pizzas Bought for 10,000 BTC — ow.ly Last Month, bitcoiners all the world over celebrated the anniversary of the world's most expensive pizza. Bought on 22nd May 2010 by Laszlo Hanyecz, the programmer paid a fellow Bitcoin Talk forum user 10,000 BTC for two Papa John's pizzas. Back then – when the technology was just over a year old – that equated to roughly $25, but is $5.12m by today's exchange rate.
